Pride is the chosen term for the lifestyle of LGBTQ people who deal openly and honestly with themselves and their sexual orientation and identity, instead of adapting, justifying, hiding or admitting to the values of the heterosexual society that is considered normal be ashamed. Pride Month aims to raise awareness among a broader public that sexual orientation and self-determination are, at their core, human rights and that many members of the LGBTQ community are among the most talented, intelligent and influential people alive or living.
June was chosen as Pride Month to commemorate the resistance of members of the LGBTQ community who resisted the ongoing crackdown by the New York City Police Department in June 1969. These clashes became known as the Stonewall riots, because the center of this clash was the Stonewall Inn on the corner of Christopher Street and 7th Avenue, Greenich Village in New York. The Christopher Street Day (CSD) was named after this Christopher Street.
